This is the first Global Studies Winter School organized by the Department of Political and Juridical Science and International Studies (SPGI). The Winter School is an intensive 5-day course, which brings together international scholars and students from a range of disciplines and geo-cultural background to discuss “the spaces and times of globalization”. The general aim of this intensive course is to contribute to the development of a critical approach to prevailing representations of global space and time whereby Western modernity is still seen as the standard against which every other form of civilization is measured. Notions of diversity and plurality, approaches to ‘glocality’ and contributions from southern theories and perspectives are characterizing features of this course.
This first edition focuses in particular on the different dimensions of communication – tools, processes and policies – in connection to changing spaces and times of globalization. Students will be invited to identify, analyse and critically address issues such as:
- changing notions of society and politics in a global, culturally diverse societies
- the challenges to participation and new forms of conflict in the global context
- global communications and governance
- the role and relevance of communication and mediation processes in the global context
- language and intercultural communication, conflict and dialogue.
The course is aimed at Italian, European and International graduates (max. 25), Master’s and PhD Level, from different disciplinary areas, such as Political and Social Sciences, Communications Studies, Language and Mediation. The organizers aim to guarantee a diversity of participating students on the basis of gender and geo-cultural and disciplinary backgrounds.
